Religious preacher Dhirendra Shastri receives death threat, probe on

Dhirendra Shastri, the head priest of Bageshwar Dham, a Hanuman temple in Gada village of Chhattarpur district in Madhya Pradesh, recently received a death threat on Sunday. The threat call was made to Lokesh Garg (27), Shastri’s cousin, on Sunday night. The unknown caller asked about preacher Dhirendra Krishna Shashtri and threatened to kill him before hanging up.

Based on Lokesh’s complaint, the Madhya Pradesh Police has registered a case under sections 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) and 507 (criminal intimidation by anonymous communication) and launched an investigation. Shashtri, who has been in the news lately, is known to travel across the country for religious addresses known as “katha”.

Recently, a Maharashtra-based anti-superstition organisation challenged him to display miraculous powers he claims to possess at an event in Nagpur. But Shashtri left Nagpur soon after. Shastri’s rise has been meteoric and he is mostly known for calling distressed people to his dham, where he tells them about their antecedents while apparently resolving their problems.
