Red rebels injured in gun battle with security forces in Malkangiri forest

Malkangiri: A fierce gun battle took place between Maoists and security forces in a forest near Kulabedha under Mathili police limits in the district on Wednesday morning.

Some of the rebels are reported to have sustained injuries in the encounter, police said.

The exchange of fire occurred during a search operation carried out by the joint team of Special Operation Group (SOG) and District Voluntary Force (DFV) in the forest, said Malkangiri SP Hrushikesh Khilari.

“The SOG and DVF of Odisha police had launched a search operation during which the Maoists cadres opened fire indiscriminately at the security forces. The jawan also retaliated in which some red rebels sustained injuries,” the SP said.

However, the injured ultras managed to flee into the dense forest, he added.

During subsequent search, the security forces recovered an INSAS rifle along with 34 rounds of bullets and magazines. A kit bag, digital camera, live magazines and other Maoist articles were also found during the search, the SP added.

The operation has been intensified after the encounter, he added.

In a related development, at least six Maoists were reportedly killed in an encounter with Greyhounds personnel in a deep forest in Visakhapatnam district of Andhra Pradesh bordering Malkangiri of Odisha. One of the slain Maoists is said to have been identified as a DCM commander hailing from Telangana.

Some others fled into the deep forests during the fierce cross fire. Police recovered an AK 47 rifle, some revolvers and ammunition from the spot, the Andhra Pradesh police said.
