Primary focus is on reducing the number of Covid-19 cases: DMET Director

Bhubaneswar: In the backdrop of the looming threat of the Covid-19 third wave, the Odisha government is taking all possible measures to tackle any emerging situation even though the infection graph is yet to witness a complete downward trajectory.

CBK Mohanty, Director of the Directorate of Medical Education & Training (DMET) on Tuesday said that at present the focus is on reducing the number of Covid-19 cases in the districts which are witnessing no let-up in the infection count.

The Covid-19 graph, especially in Bhubaneswar, is high which is mainly due to the floating population and influx of people into the Smart City from other parts of the State, said Mohanty. “Active surveillance measures have already been intensified and we hope the Covid graph will come down soon,” he hoped.

“Unlock decision is not solely based on local contact cases, but several factors and other parameters are also taken into consideration. There will be a complete unlock if the situation permits. There will be no unlock if the situation doesn’t warrant,” said Mohanty.

Mohanty said that the overall Covid-19 trajectory in Odisha is showing a downward trend and it is impossible to say whether the third wave has already set in.

“There is no concrete data as several countries experienced third wave at different phases of time. We are keeping a close watch on the situation in Odisha,” he said.

When asked about reopening of religious institutions in the districts in green zone, the DMET chief said, “The State government will take appropriate decision on the matter after reviewing the Covid situation. It has been observed that several States witnessed Covid surge when the restrictions were relaxed.”
