Police begin probe into recovery of half-buried body on Bhubaneswar outskirts

Bhubaneswar: A day after an unidentified body was found partially buried in the sands near Kuakhai River bank on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, the corpse was seized by the police in the presence of a magistrate on Thursday.

A scientific team today morning visited the Bali Jatra ground under Mancheswar police station where the body was found yesterday and conducted its 3-D scanning. The police team confirmed that the deceased was a male.

Speaking to mediapersons, Bhubaneswar DCP Umashankar Dash who also visited the spot today morning, said, “After receiving the information at around 7.30 pm yesterday, a police team rushed to the spot immediately. The team cordoned off the area with tent and guarded the spot entire night. A forensic scientific team, ACP, IIC (inspector-in-charge) of local police station and their teams and a special squad team have reached the crime scene and started investigation,” he added.

“The forensic team has conducted 3-D scanning of the body. The body will be dug out following which an inquest will be initiated and subsequently the body will be sent to Bhubaneswar AIIMS for post-mortem. As the body is yet to be identified, we cannot say anything further into the case,” said the DCP.

Dash said it will be difficult for the police team to identity the deceased as the body has severely decomposed. The police will try to ascertain the identity of the deceased using the seized clothes and footwear. The missing reports in local police stations will also be examined, he said.

“Preliminary investigation suggests the death is unnatural and post-mortem reports will be vital in conducting further investigation,” the DCP added.

As the body has no injury marks, it is being suspected that the person might have been choked or poisoned to death. Besides, police also suspect the involvement of more than one person in the crime.

The investigation team will search for missing reports at nearby Balianta, Balipatna, Mancheswar and Cuttack Sadar police stations, said sources.
