Odisha to reach 1 crore Covid vaccination milestone soon

Bhubaneswar: Within the next 96 hours, Odisha is all set to achieve a mega milestone in the battle against Coronavirus. Come June 22, the State will record administering over 1 crore vaccine doses to its eligible population. A buoyant State plans to inoculate the remaining 2.1 crore with at least a single dose by the 75th Independence Day (August 15).

The vaccination drive has taken an upswing in June. In the last 18-days, State has administered around 18 lakh doses – which is nearly 20 per cent of the total doses given in the State since January 16, the data revealed.

As per data available with the State Health Department, Odisha has inoculated over 97.57 lakh people with a single dose of the Covid-19 vaccine. With PM Narendra Modi declaring to supply vaccines to all the states free of cost, the State has plans to vaccinate over 2 crore people in the next 45-days.

“Nearly 3.1 crore population in the State are eligible to take vaccines as per the current vaccine strategy of the government to inoculate people in the age-group of 18-plus. As of today, over 17.88 lakh have been fully immunised. In the second week of June, on average around 30k second doses have been administered, which is nearly 3-times more than the number of second doses delivered to the eligible population during the peak month of May,” informed a senior official in the State Health Department.

There is a plan to administer 1 lakh second doses per day in the next 45 days, the official disclosed and added that the Odisha government has plans to inoculate everyone over 18-years of age with a single dose by August end, before the possible third wave, which is predicted to hit the State in September.

Odisha took nearly 150 days to administer around 97.6 lakh people with the first dose of the vaccine. The State has to date vaccinated nearly 5.7 per cent of the population eligible for vaccination. In terms of total population inoculated, as of June 19, the number is estimated at around 3.7 per cent. (Note: Herd immunity requires vaccination of at least 2.98 crore population in the State.)

• Vaccination Gender Ratio: As per the data available, when a total of over 42.66 lakh males in the State have received at least one dose to date, the count of jab administered female population stood at over 37.01 lakh.

• An analysis shows that for every 1000 males inoculated, the female count stood at 860. Given that the adult sex ratio in the State stood at 979 per 1000 males, the vaccination gender ratio hints at the need for higher coverage of the female population in the State.
Age-wise Status

• Till June 19, over 27.46 lakh people in the age-group of 60-plus have been vaccinated by at least a single dose. Proportionately seen, over 56 per cent of the elderly population vaccinated with a single dose.

• Similarly, in the age-group of 45-59 years, a total of over 33.15 lakh have taken at least one jab. In percentage terms, more than 54 per cent of the age-group has received at least a single dose as of date.

• In the age-group of 18-44 years, over 19.05 lakh in the State have been inoculated with a single dose of the vaccine till date. In proportion to the population in the age-group, to date only around 6.3 per cent have received a single dose. The vaccination for the age-group has started on May 1.

• In administering the second dose, among the hotspots in the second wave, only Bhubaneswar stands tall.

• Over 49 per cent of the first dose recipient in the State Capital have been fully immunised.

• Among the hotspots in the second wave, only 11 per cent of first dose recipient had taken the second dose in Sundargarh – the lowest in the State.

• The proportion in Ganjam stood at around 18.7 per cent.

• The ratio in other districts hover at around 15-25 per cent.
