No sign of third wave in Odisha, further unlock moves after review: CBK Mohanty

Bhubaneswar: Even as speculations are rife on the possible outbreak of a third wave of Covid-19 in the country in the next 6-8 weeks, the Director, Directorate of Medical Education and Training (DMET) in Odisha, CBK Mohanty, on Monday sought to allay fears by saying there has been no such sign in the State so far.

“There has been no sign of the third wave of Coronavirus at present as the trajectory of Covid-19 cases is down and stable in the State. We are not sure on the timing of the outbreak of third wave. Therefore, any prediction on its severity and effect is just speculation,” said Mohanty.

He said the possible outbreak of the third wave of Coronavirus and its severity is still in assessment stage. While infections in some districts in Odisha are still high, the number has considerably come down in other parts of the State, he said.

Though the positive cases have gone down to 2,000 in the State since last week, there is no significant fall in the positivity in the last couple of days. Similar situation was witnessed in countries like Spain and Italy where cases remained in plateau state for couple of months, he added.

Speaking on further unlock measures in the State in the next phase, Mohanty said, “The relaxations in Covid-19 restrictions depend on several factors, including test positivity rate, severity rate in the patients and Covid appropriate behaviour in the particular region.”

“The Case Fatality Rate (CFR) should be calculated at the end of epidemics as health care delivery should be given priority in the present situation,” added Mohanty.

On the other hand, State Public Health Director Niranjan Mishra said though the situation is gradually returning to normalcy, people should adhere to all Covid protocols as the next three months are crucial.

“The situation is improving and daily positive cases are also on a downward trend. While the active cases are declining, the number of recoveries is rising simultaneously. Keeping these three factors in mind, the government will take decision on further unlocking in the State. But, we have to stay alert as the next two-three months are crucial. Therefore, people should strictly maintain social distancing,” stated Mishra.
