No Delta Plus case found since May; no need to panic: Health official

Bhubaneswar: Even though the new Delta plus variant of Covid-19 virus has raised fears about another wave of the pandemic due to its highly infectious nature, the Health Department on Friday advised people to shun fears as the State has not yet detected a single case of the new variant since May.

Health Services Director Dr Bijay Mohapatra said “There has been not a single case of Delta Plus variant found from the genome sequencing of samples conducted since May. We should not get panicked as no fresh case has been detected till date.”

Speaking on the Black Fungus concerns in the State, Mohapatra said several factors lead to fungal infection. Black Fungus is not related to only Covid-19 infections, he added.

“The fungal proliferation generally occurs during immune compromise status. Those who are on anti-cancer treatment or patients consuming immune suppressive medicines after organ transplantation are vulnerable to any type of fungal infection. Black Fungus is one among other fungus. We should not associate it with Covid infections,” he pointed out.

The Black Fungus infection failed to affect the State during the second wave of the pandemic. Any kind of fungal infection can’t be linked to Covid-19 infections, he said.

Mohapatra said the single-day Covid infections in other States have decreased. “We are also expecting such a dip like other States by the second week of July. We shouldn’t let our guards down,” he maintained.

Notably, the State today witnessed 3,222 new Covid cases with Cuttack reporting the maximum single-day cases at 619 followed by 422 in Khurda, of which State Capital Bhubaneswar is a part. Similarly, 46 new fatalities have been reported in last 24 hours in the State.
