NINL worker hangs self for not getting wages for months in Jajpur

Jajpur: Distressed over non-payment of wages for months, a worker of Nilachal Ispat Nigam Limited (NINL) in Kalinganagar here committed suicide on Saturday.
The deceased has been identified as Kishore Jena of Sarangpur village. He worked at sinter plant at NINL.
Sources said after losing mental balance for not getting his wages for over four months, Kishore decided to end his life and hanged himself to death this morning. Two days ago, another poverty-stricken employee of the company died due to lack of treatment.
Sources said employees of the NINL are not getting their wages for the last four months due to closure of the company. The workers under the banner of Nilachal Banchao Milita Mancha has urged the state government as well as the Centre to resume the plant’s operation and provide their wages earlier but to no avail.
This apart, after discussion with district officials, NINL’s major shareholder MMTC was approached to give one month’s wages to the employees and resume the plant’s operation. However, MMTC refused to extend any kind of support to NINL in this direction triggering resentment among the workers.
