New terminal building at Chennai airport was inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi
PM Modi Inaugurates New Integrated Terminal Building and Other Infrastructure Projects in Chennai During his visit to Chennai on Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a new integrated terminal building at the Chennai airport, which was set up at a total cost of Rs 2,437 crore.
The new building is spread across 2.20 lakh sq metres and features 100 check-in counters, 108 immigration counters, 17 elevators, 17 escalators, and six baggage reclaim belts. The airport’s capacity will be increased from an annual capacity of 23 million passengers per year to 30 million passengers per year with the completion of the first phase. After phase two, the airport’s capacity is expected to increase to 35 million per year.
PM Modi applauded the new terminal building on Twitter, calling it a state-of-the-art facility that will boost connectivity and benefit the local economy. The Union Minister for Civil Aviation, Jyotiraditya M Scindia, Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi, and Chief Minister M K Stalin were among those present during the inauguration.
PM Modi also launched several infrastructure projects during his visit, including the Vande Bharat Express train from Secunderabad Railway Station in Hyderabad, which will reduce travel time between Secunderabad and Tirupati by almost three-and-a-half hours. The train will run at a speed of 130 kmph and save 1.20 hours of journey time compared to express trains, according to Southern Railway.
The prime minister is also scheduled to participate in the 125th annual day celebrations of Ramakrishna Mutt at the Vivekanandhar Illam and inaugurate infrastructure projects at Pallavaram. Security has been increased across the city for the prime minister’s visit.
