First dengue death in Bhubaneswar! BMC deputes team to probe

Bhubaneswar: Following information that a minor girl has succumbed to dengue in the State capital, a worried Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) administration deputed a team to the home of the deceased to conduct probe even as Bhubaneswar continues to reel under an unprecedented spurt in the vector-borne disease.

Confirming that the BMC had received information about the first dengue death in the Capital city, Zonal Deputy Commissioner, Purandar Nanda said “We have sent a team to the victim’s house. An investigation is being conducted to ascertain where the tests were conducted (on the deceased) and whether the patient had some other health issues.”

On the other hand, BMC Commissioner Sanjay Singh said that he didn’t have information about the development. While talking to reporters, Singh clarified that a massive drive is already underway to create awareness among people about the disease. Measures are being undertaken to destroy mosquito breeding sites in the affected localities.

Door-to-door surveillance activities by various teams to identify and destroy the sources in the affected localities have been intensified, Singh added.

Meanwhile, the Director of Public Health, Niranjan Mishra said since January this year, 426 dengue cases have been reported in Odisha (till yesterday). Of the total cases, 276 were reported from Bhubaneswar alone.

“Dengue cases are on the rise in Bhubaneswar since June 30. The situation is not alarming even though 10 to 15 cases are being reported on a daily basis. BMC has initiated several measures to control the mosquito menace. Once there is an outbreak, the impact lasts for over a month,” said Mishra.

Nevertheless, the dengue situation in Bhubaneswar is assuming serious proportions with each passing day. Several localities in Sailashree Vihar and Niladri Vihar areas are among the worst affected.
