Covid-19 hits Berhampur Circle Jail, over 40 infected

Berhampur: Despite all attempts to rein in, Covid crisis seems to getting out of control in Ganjam district. In a shocking development, more than 40 people including some staff of Berhampur Circle jail have tested positive for the virus.
Berhampur Municipal Corporation took to social media to share the news in its twitter handle. As per the information, 33 inmates of the jail and 10 other staff of the jail have tested positive for Covid-19.
The district medical authorities have said that the infected inmates have been isolated inside the jail and the staff tested positive asked to home quarantine.
Jail superintendent Kulamani Behera has informed that the district chief medical officer has assured to send doctors for routine health check-up of infected persons inside the jail.
Sources said swab samples from 50 inmates and 92 staff were sent for Covid test on July 19.
Ganjam district has so far reported a total of 6362 Covid cases after the biggest single-day spike of 371 positives as on July 22. It accounts for nearly one-third caseload of the entire State which has witnessed 19,835 cases till date.
In terms of death toll, Ganjam district alone accounts for 62 Covid deaths out of the total 108 in the State. It has an active case tally of 2219 while the number of recoveries has surged to 4076.
