Bhubaneswar: State unit of Congress on Thursday demanded the Centre to provide monthly financial assistance to poor people suffering from ongoing lockdown across the country.
“We demand Union Government to deposit Rs 7,500 in accounts of poor people at least for a period of six months to help them during lockdown,” said Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) President Niranjan Patnaik at Speak Up India campaign here on Thursday.
Launching a scathing attack on both BJD and BJP, the PCC chief said that both the political parties have betrayed people of Odisha for which they went through tough situations arising out of Corona.
“People of Odisha are aware of the speeches delivered by BJP and BJD before elections last year. After being inspired by speeches, some might have cast their votes to BJP or some have voted the BJD to power. In the course of time, it was found that common people have been betrayed,” Patnaik said.
He alleged that the government has been formed only for promotion and publicity instead of addressing the genuine issues.
“This is the government of publicity, commitments and betrayal. The people of Odisha as well as the country have been betrayed by both BJP and BJD for which we all are suffering from the man-made disease,” Patnaik said.
Recalling Prime Minister’s speech on COVID-19 while enforcing nationwide lockdown, Patnaik said, “PM Narendra Modi had promised to win COVID battle in 21 days while referring Mahabharata war that had concluded in 18 days. However, the infections continue to spread across the country despite lockdown.”
He termed the spread of COVID-19 in the country as ‘human-made’.
This apart, he also demanded the State Government to ensure safe return of migrant labourers to Odisha. He also demanded for financial aid for farmers, who bore huge loss due to lockdown restrictions.
