Conmen target Facebook users in Jeypore, seek money from contacts

Jeypore: With most people spending their time on cyberspace amid the COVID-19 pandemic, cyber crooks are coming up with new ways to swindle unaware users.

Some Facebook users in Koraput alleged that they have been duped by unknown people hacking into their social media accounts.

They have approached police alleging that their Facebook profiles were reportedly hacked and suspicious activities were done using the social media accounts.

As per the complaints, the cyber fraudsters after breaking into the social media accounts chatted with the friends of the persons seeking monetary help. The conmen requested the social media friends to transfer money through online wallets or bank payment gateways.

“Someone hacked my Facebook account and asked my friends to send money. He sent them messages in Hindi,” said B. Bhagaban Patra, a victim of the cyber fraud.

“My friends contacted me on Whatsapp after the hacker asked them to transfer money. The fraudster has asked them to transfer Rs 10,000 to Rs 20, 000,” alleged another complainant Sahadeb Patnaik.

Informed about the incidents, police have registered a complaint in this regard and handed over the case to cyber cell team.

“The hackers demanded money by hacking the Facebook profiles. As this is a cybercrime, the investigation will be done based upon the information available,” said Baleswar Gidhi, Town police station in-charge.
