Berhampur residents panic over sale of fake Covid drugs

Berhampur: Following the seizure of huge quantity of fake anti-covid drugs in Cuttack, people in various towns including in Berhampur city are panicked in apprehension of circulation of fake drugs in their home town.

Medicines worth lakhs are being transacted every day in the city. Locals said supply of spurious medicines has become a reason of concern for them after instances of crackdown on drug stores allegedly selling fake medicines surfaced in Cuttack and Rourkela.

“Now, fear has struck us following the news over circulation of fake medicines came to fore. These are the life saving drugs. So, the unscrupulous traders doing brisk business by supplying spurious medicines should be strictly dealt with as per law,” a local said.

On the other hand, the district administration advised the residents not to get panicked as no such incident has been reported in the city yet. V Kirtivasan, Ganjam Sub-collector said the drug controller has kept a strict vigil on medicine supply to Berhampur. There is no need to get panicked, he advised.

“District and state level squads have been constituted to keep a watch on such illegal trade of fake medicines. Drug controller or a DSP rank official will lead the team as nodal officer. The team will conduct raids at various places. If any such information regarding circulation of spurious medicines comes to our notice, immediate action would be taken”, said Pinak Mishra, Berhampur SP.

The Odisha government had ordered a Crime Branch inquiry into the seizure of huge quantities of counterfeit medicines in Cuttack and other cities in the State.

A special squad of Drug Controller had seized large quantity of “spurious” Favipiravir tablets prescribed to treat Covid-19 patients in Cuttack on June 10.

The Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik had directed the State Crime Branch to probe the incident after the Department of Health and Family Welfare confirmed that Favipiravir tablets seized from two wholesale medicine stores in Cuttack last week were fake. The Special Task Force (STF) of the crime Branch has already initiated the probe.
