Baby boy sold by father for Rs 10,000 rescued in Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: A newborn boy allegedly sold by his father for Rs 10,000 was rescued by Commissionerate police and Childline officials in Bhubaneswar on Saturday.

Childline officials say the newborn baby of six days old will be kept at an adoption centre after his rescue from Mali Sahi area.

“The father of the baby is a drug addict. Since his financial condition was bad, he refused to accept the baby and threatened his wife to abandon it as they have many children,” said Childline Director Benudhar Senapati.

“The mother became helpless and the couple sold the baby to another woman for Rs 10,000,” said Senapati adding that both buyer and seller of a baby are guilty under Section 80 and 81 of Indian Juvenile Act.

The woman who bought the baby admitted that she paid Rs 10,000 to buy the baby from the woman.

“They were about to abandon the baby. Since I have no son, I bought the baby for Rs 10,000,” she said.

However, many facts relating to the incident are yet to be confirmed.

“We are inquiring into the matter and all the facts will come to the fore after the probe is over. For the time being, the baby will be taken care at an adoption center,” said a police official.

A case has been registered in Kharavela Nagar police station. Further investigation into the incident is underway.
